Search has changed enough that businesses are learning a new vocabulary faster than they can implement it.

SEO. AEO. GEO. AI SEO. Generative search. Answer engines.

The labels are useful only if they lead to better decisions.

Here is the practical version: SEO is still the foundation. AEO is an additional way of thinking about whether your content can be understood, selected and used in answer-driven search experiences.

You do not need to abandon SEO. You do not need a secret “AI schema.” And you should be skeptical of anyone selling a technical shortcut that supposedly guarantees citations in AI answers.

Google’s own guidance is unusually clear on this point.

What Google says about AI search visibility

Google states that the same foundational SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet, and Google says there are no additional technical requirements to appear in those AI features. Google: AI features and your website.

Its newer guidance on generative AI search goes further: create original, useful, non-commodity content; keep pages crawlable; give visitors a good page experience; use structured data accurately; and do not manufacture large numbers of pages just to target every possible query variation. Google: optimizing for generative AI features.

That does not make AEO meaningless. It changes where the useful work is.

SEO and AEO overlap more than they differ

Traditional SEO asks questions such as:

  • Can search engines crawl and index the page?
  • Does the page satisfy a real search intent?
  • Is the information useful, original and trustworthy?
  • Is the site technically healthy?
  • Do internal links explain how the content fits together?
  • Is the organization/entity clear?
  • Does the page earn references, links or reputation signals over time?

A practical AEO lens adds questions such as:

  • Does the page answer specific questions clearly enough to be extracted or summarized?
  • Can a machine understand who is making the claim, what entity it refers to and what evidence supports it?
  • Is there a distinctive point of view or first-hand expertise worth citing?
  • Are definitions, comparisons, processes and recommendations explicit rather than buried in marketing copy?
  • Is the content current enough for the query?

The strongest content does both.

The biggest 2026 mistake: producing “AI-friendly” commodity content

A lot of AEO advice leads businesses in the wrong direction: create hundreds of short answers, repeat the same definition in multiple formats, publish pages for every possible phrasing and hope an AI system picks one up.

Google explicitly warns against that logic. Its current generative-search guidance says that high page volume does not make a site more relevant and that creating many pages primarily to manipulate rankings or AI responses can violate scaled-content-abuse policies.

The competitive advantage is the opposite: publish information that is difficult to replace with a generic summary.

That can include:

  • original frameworks;
  • first-hand implementation lessons;
  • expert commentary;
  • comparisons with explicit decision criteria;
  • screenshots or examples from real workflows;
  • original data when available;
  • clear explanations of tradeoffs;
  • case studies with verifiable context;
  • updated recommendations tied to current product behavior.

For SVS, that means the blog should not sound like an encyclopedia of marketing terms. It should show how websites, CRM data, automation and search actually connect.

Seven practices that support both SEO and AEO

1. Answer the main question early

Do not make the reader survive 600 words of scene-setting before learning the answer.

For a page targeting “SEO vs AEO,” state the relationship early: AEO does not replace SEO; it builds on many of the same foundations while emphasizing answer-ready clarity and machine-readable context.

Then earn the nuance.

2. Build topic clusters instead of isolated posts

A strong site should have a clear internal map of expertise.

For example:

  • pillar: connected growth systems;
  • supporting page: SEO vs AEO;
  • supporting page: local SEO for wellness businesses;
  • service page: SEO & AEO;
  • supporting page: website conversion;
  • supporting page: CRM/automation.

Internal links help readers move through that map and help search systems understand relationships between pages. Google’s SEO Starter Guide specifically calls links a crucial discovery and context mechanism. Google SEO Starter Guide.

3. Make entities and authorship clear

A search or AI system should not have to guess:

  • who published the content;
  • what the organization is;
  • what services it provides;
  • which location or market a page refers to;
  • when the article was published or updated;
  • who reviewed specialized content where review matters.

Use accurate Organization or LocalBusiness structured data where relevant. Google says structured data can help it understand page content and organizational details, but the markup must match the visible page. Organization structured data.

4. Use structured content because it helps humans first

Clear headings, short definitions, comparison tables, numbered processes and concise summaries make complex content easier to use.

That also makes important relationships easier for machines to parse.

But structure is not a substitute for substance. A perfectly formatted article that says nothing new is still commodity content.

5. Cite primary sources when claims matter

If you explain Google’s rules, link to Google. If you compare software, link to current product documentation. If you cite a statistic, trace it to the original research whenever possible.

This improves reader trust and makes the content easier to maintain.

6. Keep important information in accessible text

Google recommends making important content available in textual form for its AI features. Do not hide the core explanation only inside an image, infographic, video or interactive widget.

Use visuals to support the text, not replace it.

7. Update content when the underlying reality changes

A 2026 CRM comparison becomes weaker when pricing and features change. An AEO guide becomes stale when search platforms change reporting or policies.

Add a “last reviewed” date and create an editorial maintenance calendar for posts with software, platform or policy claims.

What about schema, llms.txt and other AEO tactics?

Use structured data where it accurately describes the page and is supported by the platform. Do not add markup simply because somebody calls it “AEO schema.” Google says there is no special schema.org structured data required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Google’s current guidance also says you do not need to create special AI text files to appear in its AI search features.

That does not mean every emerging protocol is useless across the entire web. It means you should not confuse an experiment or platform-specific convention with a ranking requirement.

How should you measure SEO and AEO?

Start with what you can measure reliably.

Google Search Console reports queries, impressions, clicks, CTR and page performance in Google Search. Google says traffic from its AI features is included in the overall Search Console web-search reporting.

Then connect visibility to on-site behavior and outcomes:

  • qualified organic visits;
  • engaged sessions;
  • calls or bookings;
  • form submissions;
  • lead quality;
  • pipeline or revenue where attribution is reliable;
  • branded search demand;
  • citations/mentions from AI tools where you can observe them responsibly.

Do not replace business measurement with a vanity metric called “AI visibility.”

The practical answer to SEO vs. AEO

If the site cannot be crawled, the service pages are thin, the brand is unclear and the content is generic, an AEO tool will not rescue it.

Build the foundation first:

  1. technically healthy, indexable pages;
  2. clear service and location architecture;
  3. original content around real customer questions;
  4. explicit expertise and trustworthy sourcing;
  5. strong internal linking;
  6. accurate structured data;
  7. measurement and regular updates.

Then use the AEO lens to make the best information easier to understand, quote, compare and trust.

That is less exciting than a hack. It is also much harder for competitors to copy.

Common questions about SEO, AEO and question research

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. For Google Search, the same technical and content foundations that support SEO also support visibility in AI Overviews and AI Mode. AEO is useful as a content lens for clarity and answerability, but it is not a substitute for crawlability, useful pages, internal links and trustworthy information.

Do I need special AEO schema or an llms.txt file for Google?

Google says there are no special technical requirements or special schema needed for its AI search features. It also says an llms.txt file does not improve or reduce visibility in Google Search. Use structured data only when it accurately describes visible page content and is appropriate for the page type.

How do I find the questions people actually search for?

Use public question-research tools and live search results to build a starting list, then replace guesswork with your own Search Console data once the site has impressions. Filter non-branded queries for question words such as what, how, why, can, should and does, then expand the existing page that best answers the intent instead of creating a thin page for every variation.
